Non-ferrous Metals ECS-C Separator

The principle of the ECS-C Sollau separator (Eddy Current Separator-Concentric) of non-ferrous metals is based on the so-called eddy currents. Very quickly rotating magnetic poles create a changeable and relatively short magnetic field, which will magnetize each conductive particle being in this area for a limited time.

The basis of this separator is a magnetic rotor fitted very with strong neodymium magnets (the rotor is positioned within a separately rotating non-metallic driven roller of the integrated band conveyer). Other parts are the vibratory feeder with a filling hopper, the band conveyer (equipped with a high endurance conveyor belt and a simple tensioning system), the electronic control system (PLC with frequency converters) and the steel housing. Furthermore, for preliminary cleaning of the entering materials contaminated with ferromagnetic particles we optionally offer a magnetic pulley.

Entering material will be uniformly spread on the conveyor belt (with the integrated magnetic rotor) by means of a vibratory feeder (the material layer thickness on the conveyor belt should comply with approximately to maximum material fraction - it is important first of all at the finely crushed materials). Materials with high conductivity, due to the Eddy currents generated with the very quickly rotating neodymium cylinder, will be magnetized for a short time. The magnetic polarity of the particles magnetized in this way is opposing the magnetic field generated with the rotor separator. Therefore, the magnetized pieces are repelled and automatically thrown out from the material transported on the conveyor belt.

The separator ECS-C Sollau is thus ideal for a continuous automatic separation of good conductible light non-ferrous metals (such as copper, aluminum, magnesium, silver etc.). The ECS-C Sollau is applicable also for sorting of brass, zinc, gold, cadmium or tin objects, with certain limitations. On the contrary, the separators based on the Eddy currents are not applicable for separation of heavy or badly conductible metals (stainless steel, lead, platinum, titanium etc.), as the materials with low electric conductivity are influenced with the magnetic field only minimally (or not at all) and therefore, due to the gravitation they fall perpendicularly down at the end of the conveyer. In general, the higher electric conductivity and the volume of single separated pieces are, the greater is the distance, to which the material is thrown away from the ECS-C Sollau (therefore, e. g. pieces of aluminum metal sheets are more easily separable than short thin wires). The ECS-C SOLLAU is able to separate particles having the diameter over 2 mm (it is valid for the rotor with 18 poles).

The ECS separator for non-ferrous metals of the firm SOLLAU is equipped with a symmetrically placed magnetic rotor, which - in comparison to the eccentrically bedded version - offers interesting advantages to their users as follows:

  • the material is exposed to the actuation of the magnetic field for a longer period, which leads to a higher separation efficiency,
  • the rotor magnets are situated for a longer time in a shorter distance from the material transported on the conveyor belt – and that is why smaller particles can be also separated,
  • if the rotor is laid concentrically, higher speed of the conveyor belt as well as higher total capacity of the separative process can be achieved (in comparison to the rotor laid eccentrically),
  • thanks to the concentric magnet placement it is not necessary to adjust the magnet position towards to the material on the conveyor belt in a complicated manner,
  • because of the high rotor revolutions outstanding results also in greater distances and at lower pole number can be achieved.

As the Eddy current type separators are rather used for finish cleaning of the previously treated material (already pre-crushed and free of undesirable ferromagnetic and another contaminants), they will be commonly placed at the end of sorting lines.

To demonstrate the very wide range of use, let us mention a few factual examples of the ECS application:

  • removing aluminum caps from glass to be recycled,
  • separation of brass rivets and hinges in the course of wood recycling,
  • removing the non-ferrous metals from the slag coming from waste incineration plants,
  • processing the scrap iron, e-waste or communal waste,
  • removing metal particles from recycled plastic materials (in order to protect injection moulding machines),
  • cleanup of mined minerals,
  • recycling casting rests coming from metal casting,
  • recycling glass, batteries, PET bottles and tires,
  • application at alternative fuels in cement works and power stations,
  • production of fertilizers and detergents.

The ECS-C Sollau model family is disposable in working widths from 500 mm to 3,000 mm, with a controllable speed of the conveyor belt (from 1 to 2,5 m/s), with a rotor rotation adjustable from 1,000 rpm to 7,000 rpm and it is fitted with a high quality motoric and electronic equipment.
