How to PERFECTLY separate aluminum chips from iron ones? (case study)

Initial status

Our customer is engaged in the purchase and disposal of discarded vehicles and the processing of metal scrap. He runs a sorting and separation line for processing discarded vehicles, which also includes a sophisticated magnetic separation system.

Problem

Vehicle hulks and metal scrap are crushed into small pieces (metal chips of several cm in size). The customer's request was to have aluminum and iron chips perfectly separated. In particular, aluminum chips had to get rid of any ferrous contamination.  

Solution

Until now, in order to separate the ferrous particles the customer has been using a magnetic drum. It was a correct solution considering the treated material, however it was not perfect.

Therefore, we have built a double magnetic drum. This magnetic separator consists of two magnetic drums placed one above the other. 


In the first stage of separation, the iron chips are separated from the aluminium ones by the first magnetic drum. However, some iron chips may not be caught if there is a large number of them. That is why, the aluminum chips further fall by gravity onto the other below situated magnetic drum, where the separation process is repeated in the same way. Thanks to the double separation, the perfect removal of ferrous contaminants from the aluminum chips has been achieved.

We have equipped both drums with the strongest neodymium magnets to ensure the best possible quality of the magnetic separation.

Both magnetic drums have a diameter of 406 mm and a length of 800 mm, allowing to process enormous quantities of material (up to 90 m3/h).
