Advantages of the high intensity magnetic filter MX-L

  • Compact laboratory equipment
  • Wet high intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS) – excellent performance
  • Original design based on matrixes made of permanent magnets
  • Very attractive price in comparison with the electromagnetic version
  • Minimum operating costs
  • Capture of submicron magnetic particles

Laboratory matrix separators MX-L

Wet high intensity permanent magnetic separators MX-L can be used for the separation of weakly magnetic ferrous particles and even paramagnetic minerals (like pyrrhotite, roasted ore, ilmenite, hematite) in order to upgrade non-ferrous minerals (like apatite, kyanite, wollastonite, wolframite, tantalum-niobium ore, manganese, feldspar, quartz, nepheline, fluorite, sillimanite etc.).

How does the laboratory high-intensity magnetic filter work?

Magnetic matrix separator consists of a metal housing, a permanent magnetic system (neodymium magnets) and a feeding hopper or pipeline flange. While the liquid material passes by gravity through the matrix case (filled up with magnetic stainless steel wool), the ferrous particles are caught and collected inside of the matrix thanks to the very intensive magnetic field generated by extremely strong neodymium magnets. The slurry inlet can be constantly checked by the inspection window. Beside the ferrous particle the matrix mesh is able to catch also bigger non-magnetic particles.

Which way is the permanent WHIMS cleaned?

In the course of manual cleaning the inner matrix case (filled up with stainless steel wool) is taken out of the separator and afterwards it can be either cleaned by pressure washing or the contaminated steel wool can be exchanged for clean stainless steel wool.

This high intensity magnetic separator is characterized by the following advantages:

  • Very high separation efficiency
  • Separation of very fine ferromagnetic particles (from 0,1 µm up to 1 mm)
  • Strong neodymium magnets generate high magnetic induction (up to 8000 Gauss in the separation zone)
  • Very deep magnetic field
  • Low maintenance costs
  • Low operational costs
  • Favourable alternative to much more expensive electromagnetic wet high intensity separators (WHIMS)
  • Various matrix cases are available
  • Simple design and high capacity
  • Simplified operating method
  • Energy saving and environment friendly
  • This separator is available in various sizes
  • Broad range of applications

The MX-L is a compact laboratory device designed for material testing, research, and separation in small volumes — the maximum capacity of the MX-L 05 model is 0.5 m³/h. Unlike the industrial MX-MC, which connects to a pressurised piping system via flanges, the MX-L operates by gravity: material flows through the matrix by free fall, with no pressure connection required. The MX-L is therefore the ideal choice for laboratories, research institutions, and anywhere that material separability needs to be verified or small samples processed before committing to an industrial installation.

The MX-L captures both ferromagnetic and paramagnetic minerals in the range from 0.1 μm to 1 mm — including submicron particles that other methods cannot retain. Typical target impurities include pyrrhotite, calcined ore, ilmenite, and haematite. Neodymium magnets generate a magnetic intensity of up to 8,000 Gauss in the separation zone. The dense stainless steel wool mesh also acts as a mechanical screen, capturing larger non-magnetic particles as well.

Material flows by gravity through a matrix filled with magnetised stainless steel wool — entirely by free fall. The strong magnetic field generated by the neodymium magnets retains magnetic impurities inside the matrix, while the cleaned material continues to flow out. The material inlet and the progress of separation can be visually monitored through an inspection window during operation — without any need to shut the unit down.

Thanks to its ability to capture even paramagnetic impurities, the MX-L is suitable for purifying a wide range of non-magnetic minerals: apatite, kyanite, wollastonite, wolframite, tantalum-niobium ore, manganese, feldspar, quartz, nepheline, fluorite, sillimanite, and others. The separator removes unwanted impurities (pyrrhotite, ilmenite, haematite) that would otherwise cause colour defects or reduce the purity of the final product.

Cleaning is straightforward and requires no special tools: the matrix cartridge is removed from the separator and rinsed with pressurised water. In the case of heavier contamination, the magnetised stainless steel wool inside the cartridge can be replaced with a new one. Thanks to the modular cartridge design, the entire procedure is quick and the unit is ready for further use within minutes.

The MX-L is used in the mining and extraction industry, the chemical and ceramics industry, and in research and testing laboratories. It is suitable wherever precise characterisation of the magnetic properties of a material is needed, material separability must be verified, or small batches with high purity requirements must be processed — for example during new product development or certification testing.

Yes — that is precisely one of the key roles of the MX-L. We carry out tests on your material free of charge and guarantee results within three days; if required, tests can be performed on the laboratory MX-L and a suitable industrial configuration can then be proposed. We will visit your site, assess the process, and recommend a specific solution — after installation we will commission the unit, train the operators, and provide authorised service throughout its entire service life.

Which industrial branches can the laboratory version of the permanent high intensity magnetic separator be used in?

Laboratory high gradient separator MX-L is used for material testing in mining, chemical, ceramic industries as well as in other kinds of laboratory and testing institutions.
