How we tested the FIREFLY mobile light cross at an airport (case study)

Airport operations know no compromises – safety must always come first. That's why we put our FIREFLY mobile light cross through rigorous testing in a real airport environment. And it wasn't just a routine test – we rented an airplane to verify from the cockpit that FIREFLY is truly visible from high altitudes and long distances. We also recorded everything on video.

Problem: How to reliably mark a closed runway in all weather conditions?

Closing an airport runway due to maintenance or adverse conditions requires clear and unmissable signage.

The aim was to verify that our FIREFLY cross meets all requirements for visibility, mobility, and ease of use – not only from the ground but also from approaching aircraft.

Solution: FIREFLY – visible, mobile, and effective

FIREFLY is designed to be:

  • Visible: Up to 8 km in daylight, at least 9.7 km at night – verified from an aircraft during approach
  • Quick to deploy: One person can assemble and put it into operation in less than 30 seconds
  • Powerful: 13 inLED lights with an intensity of 93,470 cd, three lighting modes (day, night, automatic)
  • Long-term operability: A gasoline generator ensures operation for up to 120 hours on a single tank, with an emergency backup power source for 2 hours
  • Easy to transport: Option to transport two crosses at the same time to mark both ends of the runway

Result: Successful testing in real conditions

Airport testing – including air visibility inspection – has confirmed that FIREFLY meets all requirements for safe and effective marking of closed runways. Its high visibility, simple operation, and quick deployment make it the ideal solution for small and large airports.
