Magnetic grate separator in housing - sugar production (case study)

The customer required the magnetic separator to fulfill 3 basic requirements in the sugar production process:

  • Separation on ferrous particles from 1 micron
  • Fast cleaning
  • Emphasis on work safety

The objective was to separate ferromagnetic contaminants from 1 micron at the crystal sugar production line. The sugar fraction is 0.6 mm, and the hourly capacity is 13 tons/hour. This, in a nutshell, is what the client's requirements looked like.

The obvious choice was our magnetic grate separator in housing MSS-MC LUX 250/9 N. We installed it at the last stage of sugar production. It is equipped with the strongest neodymium magnets generating an extremely high magnetic induction of 18 700 G. The crystal sugar falls between the individual magnetic tubes (forming a perfect magnetic sieve) and the ferrous particles are captured on the surface of these tubes.


With common types of grate separators, there is a risk that during cleaning (i. e., when the magnetic tubes are pulled out from the separator body, they may be attracted to each other(or, e. g., to an iron pipeline or floor). All this represents a certain danger for the operators, since they are exposed to the risk of injury to their fingers and hands. When designing our separator MSS-MC LUX, we took this risk into account and eliminated it by mounting the very strong magnetic grates on telescopic slides that are securely fixed to the separator body. It means that in the course of the cleaning process the magnetic grates remain attached to the separator body and any risks associated with the separator cleaning are eliminated.

Cleaning this separator type is a matter of seconds. In this way, we met the last customer's requirement. Besides, there are is a small container attached to the separator body in which the separated ferromagnetic material is collected during cleaning.
