Tunnel metal detector - limestone processing equipment protection (case study)

Initial status

Our customer specializes in mining and processing of limestone. During this procedure the mineral gets contaminated with tramp metal (such as bolts, nuts, larger ferrous objects, etc.).

Problem

As the excavated limestone is transported on a conveyor to the mills, crushers and other equipment, the tramp metal can damage the processing equipment and cause production shutdown as well as costly repairs. In particular, larger ferromagnetic objects caused damage to the mill and also to the conveyor belt. The company was unnecessarily burdened by the repair costs and the production shutdowns.

During processing, the limestone is transported on a belt conveyor with a width of 1200 mm, the speed of the conveyor is 2 m/s and the height of the limestone layer on the conveyor is around 250 mm.

Solution

In the first step, we used a suspended magnet with manual cleaning to remove ferromagnetic particles.

Due to the fact that the processed material also contains dangerous contaminants composed of non-ferrous metals, it was necessary to install a metal detector behind the magnetic separator. If we had installed only a metal detector, there would have been too frequent interruptions of the material flow (= unnecessary production downtime). However, as the iron particles were already separated in the previous step, the tunnel detector kept detecting only non-ferrous contaminants.

We have supplied the detector with a special surface treatment for outdoor use.

Benefits of using the tunnel metal detector METRON 05 D

  • Cost reduction - separation of metal particles from the product stream results in equipment damage prevention and significant reduction of repair costs.
  • Quality assurance - the material transported on the conveyor is now clean and free of metal contaminants = improved quality of the company's final products.
  • Increased efficiency – downtimes, originally caused by the metal contaminants, were eliminated, what enhanced the overall company's efficiency and productivity.
  • Quick investment return thanks to significant financial savings.
