Magnetic drum with a manganese shell ensures 100 % purity of the corundum intended for the production of glass molds (case study)

How we have solved a demanding separation of ferrous particles from a highly abrasive material – corundum.

Initial status

The customer specializes in the processing of corundum, used for the production of molds for the glass industry. This material is extremely abrasive and must not contain any metallic contaminants, as the end customer requires absolutely clean material. 


Problem

The client had already tried various magnetic separators and magnets, including the strongest overbands equipped with neodymium magnets, but no solution was effective enough. The corundum kept containing small ferrous particles which could not be reliably eliminated.

Solution

A rotating magnetic separator was tested first, but the device quickly clogged. Therefore, we designed a housed drum magnet MBZ equipped with a manganese shell and N52 neodymium magnets. This solution ensured:

  • Highly efficient separation of even the smallest ferromagnetic particles
  • Automatic cleaning - this means that the operator does not have to constantly check and clean the separator
  • Minimum dust nuisance during the separation process
  • Exchangeable manganese shell (can be easily exchanged when worn)

The first weeks of operation have confirmed the correctness of our solution – the magnetic drum MBZ with its durable manganese shell perfectly separates even the finest iron particles from the extremely abrasive corundum. In addition, it significantly reduces the attendance demands thanks to automatic cleaning. This project clearly demonstrates that even seemingly insoluble industrial problems can be solved with the right technology and innovative approach. In this case, a combination of the strongest neodymium magnets and the special wear-resistant manganese shell was the right solution.
