Abrasive material and the magnetic separator: how long it lasts and how to protect it
In cement plants, lime works and other operations handling abrasive bulk materials, magnetic separators are exposed to high mechanical stress. Cement, limestone, sand or mineral mixtures gradually abrade the surface of the equipment and can shorten its service life. An overview of suitable solutions can be found on the page magnetic separators for cement plants and lime works.
Where does the greatest wear occur?
The most heavily stressed parts of the separator are those in direct contact with the material stream. The rate of wear depends on the hardness and grain size of the material, the conveying speed, the volume of raw material processed and the angle of impact. If damage is not detected in time, it can result in a breach of the magnetic system housing, reduced separation efficiency or complete failure of the equipment.
How to extend the separator's service life?
The basis is the right choice of materials. For abrasive operations, more resistant stainless steels or reinforced structural parts can be used. These protect the most heavily stressed surface and, once worn, can be replaced without having to purchase an entirely new separator.
Adjusting the installation point can also help. If material strikes the separator at high speed or at an unsuitable angle, wear accelerates significantly.
Checking the surface alone is not enough
A visual inspection reveals damage to the casing, but it does not indicate whether the magnetic system still delivers the required performance. Regular checks of magnetic induction are therefore also important.
Do not wait for downstream equipment to fail
Regular checks of condition, surface and magnetic performance help extend the separator's service life and maintain stable separation efficiency.
