EMG-SM scrap electromagnets are robust circular crane magnets specially designed for handling metal scrap, steel chips or cuttings. They are mainly used in scrapyards, steel mills, foundries and recycling plants, where they ensure fast and efficient handling of ferromagnetic material.
The magnets are specially designed for scrap handling. The EMG-SM series is built for continuous industrial operation with a 75% duty cycle (24/7) and includes several sizes with diameters of 850–1850 mm and a breakaway force of up to 66,000 kg.
The durable design ensures reliable operation even in demanding conditions. The electromagnet body is made as a single-piece cast-iron casting (not a welded structure) with cooling ribs, ensuring high strength, efficient heat dissipation and preventing moisture from penetrating the magnet.
A high-quality coil with reinforced insulation minimizes the risk of short circuit. Stable performance is supported by a thermal insulation layer for handling material up to 650 °C, while magnet protection is ensured by a potting compound and reinforced bottom plate, which extend its service life.
The electromagnet is suspended from the crane hook of a gantry crane, bridge crane or mobile handler using a universal suspension system and is powered by a generator or electromagnet control system.
Scrap electromagnet – main advantages
The electromagnet body is made as a single-piece cast-iron casting with cooling ribs, ensuring high strength and efficient heat dissipation. Unlike welded structures, it is more durable and better sealed, preventing moisture from entering the magnet and damaging the coil.
The coil is made of a high-quality conductor with reinforced insulation, which significantly reduces the risk of turn-to-turn short circuits. This design increases the overall reliability of the device and, in the event of damage, allows easy repair by rewinding the coil.
A special insulating layer helps maintain the optimal operating temperature of the coil even when handling hot material up to 650 °C, ensuring stable performance and safe electromagnet operation.
The durable protective plate protects the internal parts of the electromagnet against mechanical damage during scrap handling and significantly extends its service life even in demanding operating conditions.
The coil is protected by a special potting compound that prevents electrical short circuits between the conductor and the electromagnet housing while also contributing to better heat dissipation.
How to choose the right scrap electromagnet?
When selecting an EMG-SM scrap electromagnet, it is important to consider the diameter of the electromagnet and the type of material you will be handling.
Materials such as steel chips, light or heavy scrap, ingots or blooms have different magnetic properties, and therefore require different electromagnet sizes and power ratings.
To choose the right model, it is necessary to follow the load capacity table, which lists capacities for individual material types.
If you are not sure which model to choose, contact us – our specialist will help you select a suitable electromagnet for your operation.
