How to choose an overband magnet: three numbers decide
Suspension height: the number that changes everything else
The magnetic field drops away very quickly with distance. A value measured at the core surface therefore says almost nothing about performance. What matters is the field at the height where the magnet actually hangs above the belt.
For the self-cleaning overband magnet DND-AC the installation height is stated for every model range. The ferrite range Mx F BEAST works up to 500 mm above the belt and covers belt widths to 2,000 mm. Rare earth ranges hang lower but capture smaller pieces.
Burden depth: what sits at the bottom of the belt
A piece of tramp iron at the bottom of the burden is much further from the magnet than one on top. The deeper the burden, the more reach you need — and the sooner an undersized unit shows up as a broken shredder knife.
Opening up the flow helps too. An in-line installation over a transfer point lifts capture without adding magnet power.
Smallest particle captured: ferrite or rare earth
Ferrite ranges capture pieces from roughly 1 to 1.5 mm, the rare earth ranges JACKAL, HYENA and WOLF from 0.5 mm. Nails from shredded pallets therefore belong with rare earth, a deep RDF burden with ferrite.
What to ask for before you order
Every DND-AC unit ships with a measurement report: a gausschart across 0–400 mm in 50 mm steps and a capture test on 13 reference pieces. We are the only overband magnet manufacturer publishing the measurement method. Add a 10-year warranty and a service response within 2 working days.
