Why metal shavings pass through a grate separator: six of the most common installation mistakes
The grate separator is installed and cleaned regularly, and yet metal shavings still appear in the product. This problem does not necessarily mean the separator is unsuitable. Frequent causes include the installation, the way material flows, or neglected inspection of the magnetic system. Properly designed magnetic separators for the food processing industry must always be matched to the specific material, line capacity and required level of protection.
Magnetic grate separator and an uneven material layer
The separator performs best when material passes evenly across its entire surface. If it falls only through the centre or along one side, the magnetic rods are not used evenly. Check the position of the hopper, the inlet pipework and the material distribution above the grate.
Weakened magnets reduce separation efficiency
The magnetic system can lose performance due to high temperature, mechanical damage or long-term operation. A visual check alone is not enough. The actual condition can be verified by measuring magnetic induction and comparing the results with reference values.
Insufficient cleaning of the grate separator
A thick layer of captured metal particles forms a barrier and limits the magnet's ability to capture further contaminants. The cleaning interval must therefore reflect the actual load, not merely a fixed maintenance schedule.
